The Alzheimer's Family Organization buried a time capsule
at the West Pasco County Government Center in 1990.
Included in the capsule was information about Alzheimer's
disease, the origins of AFO, photos of loved ones, and letters
from caregivers needing assistance.

In the year 2000, the time capsule was unearthered. The
Alzheimer's information was updated to include the latest
research results, demographics on how Alzheimer's disease
had increased throughout the elder population, publications
that now addressed the duty of caregiving and the greater
need for caregiver assistance, and available community resources.

Again the time capsule was buried and in November of 2010,
was unearthed to show how far we've come with community
services and programs to benefit caregivers, coping strategies
and resources, as well as the realization of a growing generation
of people suffering from Alzheimer's. As of 2010, it is estimated
that over 5 million people in the United States suffer from Alzheimer's,
affecting one in eight people age 65 and over, and one in two people
age 85 and over. The average cost of caring for an Alzheimer's patient
from diagnosis until the patient's death is currently over $300,000,
a staggering amount.

We are in great hopes that by the time the capsule in unearthed
again in 2020, there will be progress in detecting and treating
this awful disease and perhaps someday, a cure.
